Overtime Calculator
Enter your hourly pay, your regular hours and your overtime hours. You get your overtime pay and the total for the week.
| Overtime rate | Per hour | Overtime pay | Weekly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time and a quarter | $25 | $200 | $1,000 |
| Time and a half | $30 | $240 | $1,040 |
| Double time | $40 | $320 | $1,120 |
Example
At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. 8 overtime hours pay $240, which with 40 regular hours makes $1,040 for the week.
How the overtime calculator works
Overtime is paid at your hourly rate multiplied by an overtime factor: overtime pay = hourly rate × multiplier × overtime hours. Time and a half uses 1.5 and double time uses 2.
Total pay is regular pay plus overtime pay. Regular pay is your hourly rate multiplied by your regular hours.
When overtime starts depends on the law where you work and on your contract. It is commonly after 40 hours in a week, and in some places after 8 hours in a day.
Common questions
What is time and a half?
It is 1.5 times your normal hourly pay. If you earn 20 an hour, time and a half is 30 an hour.
Do salaried employees get overtime?
It depends on the country, the role and the contract. Many salaried roles are exempt, while others must be paid overtime by law.
Is overtime taxed more?
It is taxed as ordinary income. A large overtime payment can push part of your pay into a higher tax band, so more is withheld from that payment, but the overtime itself is not taxed at a special rate in most places.
