How the tip calculator works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people.

For a quick estimate, find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left. Double it for 20%, or add half again for 15%.

Whether to tip on the amount before or after tax is a matter of local custom. Enter whichever amount you want the tip based on.

Common questions

How much should I tip?

Customs differ widely. In the United States 15% to 20% is usual in restaurants. In much of Europe service is included and people round up or leave a little extra. In some countries tipping is not expected.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Then a tip has already been added. Check the bill before adding more.

How do we split when people ordered different amounts?

Work out each person’s own subtotal, then run the calculator once per person with a split of one.
