How the pro rata salary calculator works
Pro rata means in proportion. A part-time salary is the full-time salary multiplied by the share of full-time hours you work: pro rata salary = full-time salary × your hours / full-time hours.
If you work only part of the year, such as during school terms, the result is also multiplied by weeks worked divided by 52.
The hourly rate is the same as for a full-time colleague. Only the number of paid hours changes.
Common questions
Is holiday entitlement also pro rata?
Usually, yes. Someone working three days out of five normally receives three fifths of the full-time holiday allowance. Check your contract and local law.
Is the result before or after tax?
Before tax. Part-time earnings are often taxed at a lower average rate than the full-time salary, so take-home pay falls by less than the gross figure.
What does FTE mean?
Full-time equivalent. An FTE of 0.6 means you work 60% of full-time hours. A job advert showing an FTE salary is quoting the full-time figure.
